Pale blue areas bounded by a red line represent the marine protected areas where no large scale commercial fishing or seabed minerals activities are permitted. This equates to a total of 324,000 square kilometres.
The darker blue area bounded by the bold black line is the Cook Islands Exclusive Economic Zone. This is where the Marae Moana Act 2017 requires that any economic activities must be consistent with the primary objective of the Marae Moana Act which is: to protect and conserve the ecological, biodiversity, and heritage values of the Cook Islands marine environment
Both the pale blue area and the dark blue area bound by the bold black line make up the area of Marae Moana.
